60-Second Stretch

“Every now and then a man's mind is stretched by a new idea or sensation,
and never shrinks back to its former dimensions”
(Oliver Wendell Holmes, Autocrat of the Breakfast Table, 1858 ).

Markham Woods was born in September 1983 out of a vision to evangelize the lost, teach believers to walk in their faith, equip them for the work of the ministry, and release them to perform the work of ministry.
The sample you see here was a custom site design I created back in 2008. The site has since been redesigned.

Revosummer

RevoSummer was a Jr. & Sr. High summer camp unlike any other. For five days students and leaders were immersed in a world where things such as music, the arts and sports become surgical tools for transplanting the gospel into dark places. Even the location was unique, Walt Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando!

Law 1: The Law of the Lid

You will always have more cups than there are lids that fit them, no matter what you do.

Law 2: The Law of Influence

There is an un-identifiable force named “Idunno” which is capable of exerting incredible influence over the decisions of your child.

Law 3: The Law of Process

Every activity involving children will take four times longer than it should, no matter how much you rehearse the process.

Law 4: The Law of Navigation

Children do NOT know where they are going even if you did just give them explicit instructions, hence Law 3.

Law 5: The Law of Addition

One child can scatter 100 toys in one minute. Two children can scatter 1,000 toys in one minute. Go figure.

Law 6: The Law of Solid Ground

Faces and bottoms are destined to experience the fury of solid ground. Survival is nearly 100%.

Law 7: The Law of Respect

Children do not respect weak parents. Show them your jugular and they will go in for the kill.

Law 8: The Law of Intuition

A mother’s intuition is like some sort of freaky alien super power. Kids know this and are baffled by it. Use that to your advantage.

Law 9: The Law of Magnetism

By some cruel twist of fate, children are natural magnets for all things unclean. Get close enough to a child and you will find this out first-hand. Especially if you are wearing white. And on the way out the door.

Law 10: The Law of Connection

You will always have an enduring connection to your child, even if it is just from your garment to his runny nose.

Law 11: The Law of the Inner Circle

Be forewarned: The day she graduates from a crib to a “big girl bed” is the day she invites herself to the inner circle of your own bed. This cannot be stopped.

Law 12: The Law of Empowerment

A child’s feeling of empowerment is inversely proportional to your desire for them to do it themselves. Go ahead, think it through…we’ll wait.

Law 13: The Law of the Picture

Every picture, every scribble, is a work of art. Don’t even think about discarding it. They WILL notice.

Law 14: The Law of Buy-In

Kids give immediate buy-in. Therefore, you should make an effort to limit the number of times you threaten to sell them into slavery.

Law 15: The Law of Victory

Be sure to celebrate the little victories…like actually finding both little shoes in the same room.

Law 16: The law of the BIG MO

After you’ve used the very last wipe, the next diaper will be the BIG MO.

Law 17: The law of Priorities

Your priorities mean nothing to a child. Your explanations of those priorities mean even less.

Law 18: The law of Sacrifice

It will be many years before you are able to enjoy a night out or even a peaceful meal. That’s part of the package. Deal with it.

Law 19: The Law of Timing

Your child will experience an “emergency” (real or imagined) at the exact moment you sit down on the toilet.

Law 20: The Law of Explosive Growth

Your child will experience a massive growth spurt the day after you spend money on any article of clothing.

Law 21: The Law of Legacy

As a parent, your own children are the only legacy you have that means anything. Raise them well and others will praise you no matter what else you do in life.

He Said, She Said…

Think About ItGod’s Word is the truth that sets you free!

Read About It—John 8:31-58

A surgeon, an architect and a lawyer are having a heated debate concerning which of their professions is actually the oldest profession.

The surgeon says: "Surgery is the oldest profession. God took a rib from Adam to create Eve. Now that’s old!”

The architect says: "Hold on, Doc! You’re forgetting that God was an architect even before that, creating the world out of chaos in six days!"

The lawyer yawns and says: "Gentlemen, Gentlemen...who do you think created the chaos??!!"

Well, lawyers may not have “created the chaos,” but it ain’t no secret that they know how to “muddy the waters” in the courtrooms. The truth is that we all have “lawyer” tendencies inside. We will argue and wrangle over words until we are blue in the face. And what about the justice system? We’ve become so inundated with laws, and loopholes, and laws to cover the loopholes (and so on, forever) that it is nothing short of a miracle each time justice is really served! For example, John Carter, a New Jersey man, sued McDonald's for injuries he sustained in an auto accident with a Mickey-D’s customer. He claimed that the customer who hit him did so after spilling the contents of his chocolate shake (which he purchased from McDonald's) onto his lap while reaching for his fries. He alleged that McDonald's sold their customer food knowing he would consume it while driving and without announcing or affixing a warning to the effect "don't eat and drive." Thankfully, the court agreed that McDonald's had no duty to warn customers of obvious things which people with a brain should already know. But, get this, the judge refused McDonald's request for attorney's fees stating that the plaintiff's attorney was "creative, imaginative and he shouldn't be penalized for that." This case was in the court system for three years, underwent appellate court review and cost McDonald's over $10,000. (Source: ATRA and SAALA) Creative and imaginative…so much for justice, huh? No wonder Paul warns Timothy so strongly to stay away from “foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels” (2 Timothy 2:23). That is exactly what the Pharisees loved to spend their time doing—arguing over the words of the law. Too bad they weren’t as passionate about the truth behind the words! They might have actually found freedom from the legal webs they had created!

Okay, go back and read John 8:31-58 one more time.

King of the Hill

Posted by Eric Wilbanks Monday, February 16, 2009 0 comments

Think About ItGod’s Word is an unstoppable force!

Read About It—Acts 19:13-20

I love stories of underdogs—you know, the 95% of average folks like you and me—that claw and scratch and wrestle their way to the top of the food chain to emerge as victorious over the bad guys! I love to see the nice guy work hard and end in victory! As a matter of fact, most people love to see the good guys win. As little kids we start out by playing “King of the Hill.” Everybody is working against the odds to dethrone the reigning King and become the new ruler. And it is always sweet when the nice guy (or gal) brings down the bully! Or what about the team that starts out the season 0-3 only to fight back and go on to win the championship? Pro wrestling was founded on this principal of good guys working their way to the top, taking down the bad guys one at a time. That’s just the way it is: We feel a sense of justice when arrogant and evil people are “knocked off of their high-horse.” There is something unnatural and unsettling about bad guys who win in the end. It creates a sense of what writers call “disequilibrium.” In other words, we are left feeling as if all of nature is “out of balance” and doomed for destruction. If for any reason you doubt the truth of this, just take a look at the movies. Even Hollywood, despite their apparent love affair with all that is wrong and evil in this world, recognizes that audiences expect to see the “good guy” (which may translate into the “least bad” guy) come out on top. When you translate the inexhaustible goodness of God’s word into a world that is morally and spiritually bankrupt, you can’t help but watch in awe as the powers of darkness are systematically dethroned. In the end, the Good News of God’s Word becomes the new King of the Hill in that life or community! Talk about your success stories! God’s Word tops them all!

Okay, go back and read Acts 19:13-20 one more time.

In honor of Valentine's Day (and of course my lovely wife) I decided to post a list of my favorite love songs of all time (in no particular order) using the Imeem Player (above). Although the Day itself has passed, maybe this list will help keep love in the air. You'll find a little bit of everything here, so turn up the speakers, press play and enjoy. Happy Valentine's Day one and all.

Virus Alert!

Posted by Eric Wilbanks Monday, February 09, 2009 0 comments

Think About ItGod’s Word is alive! (Hebrews 4:12)

Read About It—Acts 12:19-25

Computer viruses can wreak havoc to your cyber health! (Even Mac users--long apathetic about viruses--are now forced to at least be aware of potential threats.) A well-planned and executed virus can literally spread around the globe in a matter of days or even hours. But despite the insidious character of a virus, it is still nothing more than a computer program—a set of commands that your computer executes. Just goes to show that even when buried within an electronic collage of 0’s and 1’s, language is a powerful medium that can influence for good or evil.

Kind of makes you wonder what it would be like if today’s technology had existed when Jesus walked the earth. Can you imagine—Jesus walks by the first disciples and says, “Follow me.” Within a few days, the entire world has received an e-mail (or Tweet or IM or whatever!) that tells about this man whom some are calling the “Messiah”. (Did I mention that they also received communiques about the Microsoft/Nike e-mail trace program and the kid who died when he licked a used hypodermic needle in his double-dipped ice cream cone?) Anyway, Jesus’ life and ministry picks up speed at an accelerated rate! Every time He heals someone or casts out a demon, news spreads around the globe within hours! People flock from all over the world to see Him! Web cams broadcast 24-hour feeds of Jesus’ ministry. Bootleggers distribute MP3’s of His “Sermon on the Mount.” Every word He preaches becomes the hotly debated topics of blogs, Facebook and the Twitter-verse. Then there are the religious opponents of Jesus, the Pharisees and Sadducees. Every lie they tell, every attempt to defame and discredit Christ spreads just as quickly, just as thoroughly as the truth. Weird, huh?

You see, in the “real” world, both truth and lies perform just like a computer virus. They infect the system of every vulnerable user! And we are like computers, our own “programming” constantly evolving from a steady stream of data flowing in and out of our lives. Acts 12:24 says that the Word of God “continued to increase and spread”! Even before the invention of computers and viruses, the truth of God was an unstoppable force that spread across the face of the earth along human networks, infecting the system of every user and literally changing the world forever! And it is still growing and spreading today!

Okay, go back and read Acts 12:19-25 one more time.
